Dr Philomena Keane

Throughout my career in education, an understanding of psychology has informed my inclusive work with children and young people. I gained my honours degree in psychology at London Guildhall in 1999. Whilst studying in London I completed voluntary work in Tower Hamlets, and developed teaching skills as a seasonal TESOL Teacher. In 2000 I completed my post graduate certificate in primary education at Chester College. I initially taught in a primary school in the Moss Side area of Manchester. I later moved to the local secondary school to gain more experience of supporting pupils with additional needs. In 2004 I began managing a pupil referral unit, with an emotionally literate ethos. In 2006 / 2007 I worked as an advisory teacher at a national charity, helping to improve life chances for young people with emotional and behavioural needs.

In September 2007 I was awarded a place on the doctorate course in educational psychology. Studying the doctorate at Newcastle University, emphasised ethical practice as fundamental to child centred educational psychology. During my first year placements I was mentored by sensitive, solution focused supervisors. During my second year placement I was supported to develop creative, visual and pupil centred research strategies. In my third year I designed activities to help children transferring from primary to secondary school. I was privileged to be nurtured during my initial years of practising as an educational psychologist, with Cumbria Local Authority. Experienced practitioners helped me to problem solve using higher order thinking skills, and to discuss / question ethical dilemmas. I then moved to Cheshire East Local Authority, where I was trained to use innovative group consultation models which allowed me to fully appreciate adult pedagogy in practice. The expertise and commitment of Special Educational Needs Coordinators in the area was inspiring.

I work in an imaginative way, using creative resources to help individuals and groups express their views. The activities I use have facilitated person-centred goal setting and action planning. I specialise in assisting children and young people who are struggling to manage their emotions and behaviour. I have provided support to individuals, groups, and through staff training. I have also facilitated multi-disciplinary meetings using problem solving models. I have an interest in bereavement processes, and have aided schools in the aftermath of critical incidents.

I am motivated by work which promotes equality, inclusion and social justice. I aim to nurture resilient, solution orientated thinking at an individual, group, school, and community wide level.
